Chapter

Eleven

Emma

It’s rare to have a Saturday to myself. I’m normally running errands or hovering over JT to make him do his chores. Getting to lounge in my tub with bubbles up to my neck and the country music I love playing softly from the speaker on the shelf–well, it’s a luxury and one that I mean to savor for as long as I can.

But that thought has no sooner crossed my mind than I hear my garage door lifting. Seconds later, there are heavy footfalls on the stairs. And I know those footsteps. If I could sink under the bubbles and hide, I would. Elizabeth is on a tear and that’s the last thing I want to deal with.

“Your ex-husband is an asshole,” she says as she barges right into my bathroom.

So much for relaxation. “Can I at least get out of the tub before we have this conversation?”

She ignores me completely and perches on the closed lid of the toilet. “Who the hell does he think he is? JT is my nephew! I’m his aunt, for fuck’s sake. It’s my job to defend him against everyone–including his own father!”

This is a fight we’ve had before. And I’m sure it’s a fight we’ll have again. “Lizzie, Troy is only looking out for him. JT has done some really stupid things lately and he has to pay the price for that.”

“Does that price have to include wearing an orange vest like a convict and picking up trash for the whole damned town to see?”

“Yes. Yes, it does,” I tell her. It drives me crazy the way she goes off halfcocked, but she’s been that way her whole life. “I love you, Lizzie, but you’ve got to realize he’s not a baby anymore. It’s not scraped knees and crayon marks on the cabinet anymore. The stakes are higher now.”

“I should have known you’d take his side! Honestly, with the way you too have each other’s backs, why the hell did you even get divorced?” There’s no heat in the question, just disgust.

“Because being married wasn’t right for us, but being JT’s parents was. He comes first. Always. Now, hand me a towel and get out. Sister or not, I’m not parading my naked ass around in front of witnesses.”

Lizzie exits the bathroom and I climb out of the tub. I have my towel in hand when I hear more shouting. Fuck. Troy. Having him and my sister under the same roof is like throwing a match on gasoline.

I wrap the towel around myself and rush down the stairs. They’re standing in the middle of my kitchen screaming at one another.

“Lizzie, go. I’ll send JT to your shop as soon as he gets home… Troy wouldn’t be here without a reason.” My words come out with a snap, but I’m at the end of my patience.

She wants to argue. I can see it in her face. But then she just makes a sound of disgust and whirls on her heel to leave. And then I look at Troy who doesn’t appear to be any calmer now that my sister is gone.
